From Out of the Vast Comes Nearness is a 2011 album by American electronic composer and synthesist Paul Ellis, and his first release for the Lotuspike label. Across five long-form pieces, Ellis brings together ambient sound design, slowly evolving sequencer patterns and richly layered synthesizers, balancing the spaciousness of ambient and space music with the pulse of classic Berlin-school electronics.

Ellis has been working in electronic music since the 1980s and was a founding member of the synth group Dweller at the Threshold. His music draws on European electronic traditions, minimalism and impressionistic composition; here those influences are particularly clear. The album was dedicated to Steve Reich, Klaus Schulze, Peter Baumann and Patrick O’Hearn, while its broader sonic vocabulary also recalls Tangerine Dream and Vangelis without simply reproducing their sound.

The result is remarkably patient music: melodic and detailed, but given plenty of room to breathe. Sequencer figures appear, transform and dissolve into broad atmospheric passages, while subtle shifts in harmony, texture and tone sustain movement over pieces ranging from roughly eleven to twenty-one minutes. The cosmic imagery suggested by the titles is reflected in the music itself — expansive, reflective and quietly dramatic rather than overtly cinematic.

For us, its particular strength is the way Ellis connects the vocabulary of classic electronic music with a cleaner, more contemporary sense of space and sound design. It feels rooted in that tradition without being trapped by it — an album that rewards both close listening and simply allowing its slowly changing landscapes to unfold.
